After attending the closing ceremony of exercise Garuda Shield in Indonesia on June 22, I arrived in the Philippines to meet with dignitaries there before heading for New Zealand and Australia where I will spend the Fourth of July, before returning to Hawaii, time zones away. I hope to return to Hawaii in time to celebrate the Fourth with Soldiers and families at Schofield Barracks. Hawaii JROTC Cadets Honored at Fort Shafter

FORT SHAFTER, HI – Approximately 800 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from 26 high schools were honored during the 27th Annual Governor’s JROTC Review and Awards Ceremony on historic Palm Circle April 30.

Top cadets from each high school were awarded the JROTC Kina’ole award from Hawaii Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. and congratulated by the ceremony’s host, Lt. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, commanding general, United States Army, Pacific.

He updated the leaders on a variety of topics including Pacific AOR-wide military issues, recruiting and retention, the Army's economic impact, as well as other national security topics of interest.
